Our name is a hat tip to Kea, the Kiwi Expat Association, which has connected and supported globally minded New Zealanders for a generation, a spirit of keeping good people close to opportunity that runs through everything we do.

How The Fund Works

Institutional Architecture - Investor Protections

We back essential, owner-operated businesses in New Zealand and help them grow, bringing them together into a stronger, well-run group rather than buying to flip. The fund is a New Zealand limited partnership: a tax-transparent, pass-through structure used by the world’s best funds, with limited-partner liability capped at committed capital. Built for families who’ve seen enough fund structures to know the difference.

About Our Founder

Farmers, Then Truckers, Then Mechanics

Farmers, Then Truckers, Then Mechanics

Five generations of my family have lived and worked on a couple of remote islands in the South Pacific, the ones nobody knew about until a hobbit came along.

We came over from southern England in the 1800s as farmers with a thirst for adventure. My people worked the soil and navigated weather systems for a living. Then my grandfather built a trucking company, moving the goods a growing country needed around the country. Some of the older folks in town still talk about the Christmas the town ran out of beer, and the man who drove a windswept road for hundreds of kilometres in a tanker truck to fix it. That was Allan Teece, who had already fought in Africa in the Second World War.

Today the closest family business to us is run by my uncle and his sons. They do mechanical services, getting hamstrung ships back to sea or keeping them from breaking down in the first place, which means the country's seafood gets where it is going on schedule. They are the living realisation of MacGyver. They will give me a hard time about how long it takes me to change a spark plug, briefly, and then help me finish the job. They are also a case study in succession done properly, which is to say they got the kids to fall in love with the business and the trade early.

Farmers, then truckers, then mechanics. The ethic has never changed. Show up, do the work, and be of service.

Somewhere along the way, commerce and technology started implying that this kind of work is something you grow out of. My family taught me the opposite. Working with your hands and your mind together is a rare combination and something to be proud of. The people who work the land, fix the machines, and keep the infrastructure we all rely on running are among the most honest, capable, straight-talking people you will ever meet. There is a premium on candour now and a shortage of it, so I have gone back to where I know I can find it.

Which brings me to what we do. The businesses we back are not thrilling, and that is the point. They earn steady, recurring revenue and they grow slowly. They are often owned by someone in their sixties who built something real over thirty years and is now facing a hard question, because the next generation is overseas and has other plans.

Left alone that becomes a succession vacuum, then a succession crisis, and then an opportunity for circling sharks. The business gets stripped for parts or quietly fades, and the crew that depended on it scatters. It is a tragedy hiding in plain sight, and there is a better answer. A patient owner who respects what was built, keeps the good people, and gives the founder a dignified way to hand off their life's work.

I am not choosing between America and New Zealand, or between finance and the trades, or between ambition and roots. I am choosing both.
